Unternehmen: Leibniz-Institut für Photonische TechnologienArbeitszeitmodell: VollzeitStellenbeschreibung:PhD candidate for "PhotoBrane" in the Department Quantum Detection (m/f/d) in Jena

At the Leibniz Institute of Photonics Technology (Leibniz IPHT (https://www.leibniz-ipht.de/en/homepage/) ) we are looking in the Research Department Quantum Detection (https://www.leibniz-ipht.de/en/departments/quantum-detection/) for a full-time (100%) position for a

PhD candidate (m/f/d)

The position is to be filled as soon as possible and is initially limited to a period of 3 years.

An extension will be sought if suitable.

The Leibniz-IPHT is a university independent research institute with close connection to the Friedrich-Schiller-University (https://www.uni-jena.de/en) Jena and member of the Leibniz association (https://www.leibniz-gemeinschaft.de/en/institutes/leibniz-institutes-all-lists) .

Job description

The work will be carried out within the framework of the Horizon Europe Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Training Network PhotoBrane ("Photo-tuning membranes for molecular separation"). PhotoBrane is at the forefront of innovation, developing next-generation photo-tunable and photo-regenerable membranes. These groundbreaking membranes potentially transform industries such as energy conversion, biomedical applications, water purification, and environmental protection by enhancing selectivity, permeability, and operational longevity.

The proposed doctoral research project, titled «Synthesis and fabrication of cross-linked photo-responsive Langmuir layers», will be concerned with the synthesis of two-dimensional light-res¬pon¬sive layers at the air-water interface. A variety of amphiphilic dyes, especially photo-switches, will be linked via covalent bonds. The latter should enable the preparation of molecularly thin, but chemically and mechanically stable and free-standing membranes that enable light-controlled molecular sieving as innovative separation process. Secondments to European partner institutions are mandatory.

Your field of activity includes:

- Planning and conducting the synthesis of two-dimensional polymers at the air-water interface
- Fabrication and characterization of monomolecular membranes and thin organic films with systematically varied compositions, using Langmuir-Blodgett and related techniques
- Characterization of the films using microscopy (optical and scanning electron microscopy), UV-Vis absorption and emission spectroscopy, as well as vibrational spectroscopy

Your qualification:

- Master's degree in chemistry

Desired knowledge and skills:

- Prior experience in synthetic chemistry
- Very good level of English (oral and written)

Eligibility:

- Candidates can be of any nationality, but they must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. They must also be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers and have not been awarded a doctoral degree.

We offer:

- An open welcoming culture and an inclusive and interdisciplinary working environment: Located on the Beutenberg campus in Jena, Leibniz-IPHT is home to more than 400 employees from around the world working at the interface of physics, biochemistry, technology, data science and medicine to develop the photonic technologies of tomorrow.
- World-class equipment and facilities: Leibniz-IPHT has a large number of physics, chemistry and biology laboratories at the highest level. It also has state-of-the-art fiber drawing and clean room facilities as well as microfluidics fabrication and big data computing facilities.
- Thorough and comprehensive personal training: Transferring good practices in scientific working and outreach is one of our main focus points. In a respectful and appreciative environment, you will learn everything you need for a career inside and outside of science. Moreover, plenty of workshops and opportunities for scientific exchange are offered by the Leibniz IPHT, as well as the Abbe School of Photonics and the Graduate Academy of the Friedrich-Schiller University Jena.
- A family-friendly working environment with support offers for the compatibility of family and work (e.g. parent-child office, campus kindergarten places, advice on family care situations from trained care guides and much more).
- Flexible working time models as well as 30 days vacation/year, special annual payment and bridge days.
- Jena - City of Science: a young city with a vibrant local cultural agenda!

Salary:

Competitive salary as an EU researcher with full social benefits under European MSCA regulations. The appointment is limited to 36 months.

About us:

We are a modern, internationally focused research institute. Work-life balance is one of our central concerns. We value diversity and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of gender, disability, nationality or ethnic and social origin. If women are underrepresented in the area of the advertised position, they will be given preferential consideration in the hiring process if they are equally qualified.
