The Institute of Biology and Chemistry, Department of Biology, Faculty 4 has two vacancies as
Research assistant (m/f/d)
(TV-L E 13, 65%)
The two positions are part-time (65%) and to be filled for a period of 3 years as of 1 June 2025.
Your tasks:
Participation in a DFG funded binational research project in collaboration with the University of Warsaw: Assessing impact of short-term climatic change on human populations of the ancient Near East using combined histological and isotopic methods.
Aim of the project is the microscopic investigation of teeth to analyse wear patterns as well as chronologies of developmental disturbances of humans from a large time span from the Neolithic up to the Iron Age to reconstruct living conditions (project part Hildesheim). High resolution isotopic profiles as proxies of environmental fluctuations or human mobility will be measured on these teeth (project part Warsaw) and analysed for correlations with the developmental disturbances (joint part of the project).
You will prepare and analyse thin ground sections of teeth and determine the formation time and the occurrence of developmental disturbances.
You will microscopically analyse tooth surfaces for specific wear patterns as well as surface hypoplasia.
You will participate in the interpretation and publication of the results.
Your profile:
- A completed academic degree in biology or comparable disciplines with experience in at least one of the following research areas: Bioarchaeology, Palaeobiology, biological Anthropology, Biogeochemistry, or Odontology
- Possibly also to staff as post-doc position
- Willingness to take part in project meetings in Poland and to present results of the research on international scientific conferences
It is desirable that you demonstrate:
- Experience in the preparation and analysis of histological specimens of biological hard tissues
- Experience in the analysis of wear on tooth surfaces (e.g. dental microwear texture analysis DMTA, meso-, or macrowear)
We offer:
- integration into international networks
- Active support for attending academic conferences
- Intensive supervision, support for academic career development, and additional training
As a family-friendly university, we offer a varied, interdisciplinary range of tasks, flexible working hours, regular further and advanced training and a special annual payment within the framework of TV-L. In joining the university, you will become part of a dynamic, committed and open-minded team.
